Speaking of Russia, again, Will Durant delivered a lecture on that nation the other day, after he and his wife returned to New York from a three weeks’ tour of Russia. They did not stay any longer because Mrs. Durant told her her husband she would “go mad” if she had to see the rags and the starvation of those unhappy people any longer. Dr. Durant stated to his audience that, not since the days of Ivan The Terrible or Peter The Great have the people of Russia been so completely terrorized, so utterly miserable from lack of food and clothes to keep them warm. The Durants had “official guides” as all foreign visitors have, and so they were “only permitted to see what the government permitted them to see,” but. even under such supervision, the face of starvation was at every train window, the look of gaunt fear in every eye.Stalin, Man Of Steel, is enforcing capital punishment in the grain sections for theft of wheat or other grain, and even this dire threat is not enough to save the seed grain from the hungry mouths of the peasantry. In recognition of the fact that the present policy has failed of feeding the population, Stalin has ordered a return to Lenin’s old plan, which provides that a farmer be told at the beginning of the season how much wheat he must pay in taxes to the government. Any over that amount he can dispose of as he likes. Recently all grain except enough for the seed has been confiscated by the government, and so a state of indifference and apathy has existed, resulting in a scarcity of grain, and wide-spread starvation.** 11? 4 n i~l i r rx1 H n /-I n nnrM tii 1 i-. v\l Atil
