Wilkinson enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1938 and joined the Army Air Corps as a flying cadet in 1939. He was at Hickam Field at tha time of the attack on Pearl Harbor and for his outstanding work during the raid received the decoration and medal of the Purple Heart. He took part in the air raid on Wake j Island and for meritorious service there was given the distinguished flying cross. He was promoted from lieutenant to captain in March, 1942, and received the rank of major in February, 1943.
