Hattie W. Caraway Makes Announcement From Washington BAILEY SPECULAT’N Governor May Ask Another Term or Oppose Mrs. Caraway. Prather Announces Little Rock, Jan. 10 (4)-Hattie W. Caraway today asked the peo ple of Arkansas to return her to the United States Senate for a second full term at the 1938 elec tions. Her announcement for re-elec tion, made at Washington, was ex pected in political circles to pro vide the signal to bring on an nouncements for major offices from other state leaders, who generally have been holding their own counsel and “waiting for someone else to make a move.” At the forefront of all specula tion was what course 43 year old Governor Carl E. Bailey would pursue. It was conceded that only the governor and possibly a few of his closest personal friends held the answer to the oft-asked question of whether he would run for a second term or seek the Senate seat. Announcement Brief In a brief, formal statement Senator Caraway ended a debate which had raged in statehouse quarters for two years over whether she would or would not run again. She said: “IT will be a candidate for re election. I have received letters from all over the state urging me to run. I think I have benefit ed from the experience I receiv ed in the Senate during my first full term and it will help me serve the people of Arkansas.” The only woman to win full term election to the Senate, she first entered the upper house by appointment after the death of her husband, Thaddeus Caraway in 1931. Subsequently elected to complete his unexpired term, she won a smashing victory over five men opponents for the full term in 1932. It was then that the late Senator Huey P. Long of Louisiana came into Arkansas to campaign for her. Already in the field against her in 1938 was J. Rosser Venable, Little Rock, who announced sev eral weeks ago. He ran for the Senate against the late Joe T. Robinson in 1936. Prather Seeks Secretary’s Post The weekend brought a form al announcement for secretary of state from Bob Prather of Vimy Ridge, supporter of Rep. John E.
