It was first trav-^ eled by Joseph Doyle—the first whiteman to locate in Pueblo county, thesecond white man in Boon* , and thethird white man to locate in tho cityof Pueblo. He died in 1S74. c I Joseph Doyle, founder of the Doyle ^ ranch on the Huerfano, used to send haLf-a-hundred men. Mexicans, over . the road with prairie schooners, pack ' ' animals, and supply wagons, twice ' every year. They made the trip to Santa Fe, N. M-, and brought back supplies. This was away back In the forties- In those days it was necessary for wagon trains to travel in charge of a large body of armed guards as protection against Indians. Doyle had 100 Mexicans, Including women and children of the laborers, who worked on his ranch. He was tho pioneer cattleman of the county.Doyle had a grist mill, and two white families, one living at Pueblo, another at Boone, used to send their grain to his mill to be ground. Thousands of Pueolo county residents have traveled this old road for years without knowing its history. The story of Doyle, and many other tales of the early settlors of this county, is recounted by John Finn, a resident of Grimaldi for 36 years.The road until recently contained a bad stretch south of the Doyle ranch. This has recently been graded by the *'T Pueblo county commissioners, and tho ** residents of Grimaldi, Wareraort and t; White Rock report that the highway sc is in excellent condition at present.
