Search fob a Kidnapped Colored ! Man in Locwiana. -— The Rochester; J (N.Y.) Democrat, of the 17th tilt., con- j tains an account of a search made in this I State for a negro, Charles Granby by i ;! name, of that city, who is said to have j* i been kidnapped and held in bondage by a j ^ j Louisiana planter. It seems that a negro' 5 man who represented himself as a fugitive* | slave from Louisiana, and professed to be Fjthe bearer of a message from Granby, im-j •! parted the above information to persons in * •j Rochester. Gov. Clark, of New York, being advised of the circumstances of the: ’ case, sent Joseph Cochrane, Esq., as a’ I! Commissioner to Louisiana, for the pur-! j pose of restoring Granby to freedom. The i i Democrat thus speaks of Mr. Cochrane’s s visit:r “On his arrival at New Orleans, Mr.I Cochrane called upon the Hon. Thec-dore^ G. Hunt, formerly member of Congress; from that city, and the Mayor of the city, j t to both of whom he had letters. Both| these gentlemen very promptly and cheer-.* fully offered any aid in their power, assur..* ing Mr. Cochrane that if Granby was,* wrongly held in slavery, and could be dis- J r covered, there would be no difficulty or de-j! lay in effecting his liberation. Mr. Coch- j rane remained in New Orleans and ricini-r ty about a week, and diligently pursued 1 every supposed trace of the kidnapped boy,;. but without the least sign of success. He j was several rimes up and down the river, for many miles, visiting different townsi and plantations where it was supposed the I kidnapped man could be found. He was readily aided by counsel in New Orleans, and by the Judge and Deputy Sheriff of ’ St. Charles District, above New Orleans.I “ The probability is that Granby is not in that vicinity. The planter whose name ( was given as his owner, resided in theneighborhood of the place described as the 1 residence of Granby; but he has been ’ dead for two years, and his son, the present ' , owner, is in Europe. The overseer readi-t ly permitted Mr. Cocbrartfc and the Deputy Sheriff to search among the slaves, but the stolen boy was not there. Granby left ! 1 here some two years since, and is supposed 1 to Ijeln slavery somewhere in the South ; but it is evident that the information in regard to his living near New Orleans was . , an innocent mistake or an imposition. At , any rate, Mr. Cochrane’s utmost diligence ;* has been exerted without discovering any. •'* thing which in the least confirms the in- 1 telligence that led to his appointment on i this mission.’*The reader of the above, if he bo not a!1 fanatical, bigoted Black Republican, can-;1 not fail to notice the difference between’ the treatment received by Mr. Cochrane ji in this State, and that which every South- ‘s erner meets with at the North, who goes (; there in quest of his fugitive slave. Here every facility was offered to Mr. C. to re- ’ jI j cover Granby, while at the North every! |II obstruct ion is thrown Jo the way of the i ! Southern slaveholder who goes there toI * reclaim his property under the sanction ofj.« j one ot the laws of the United States, j \ jThis account showy up the liberality ofj: Southern men in ils strongest light, and(: Iaffords another illustration ot what truej , | philanthropy is, in cnutradistinctioii to the ' , hypocritical professions of the unprincipled j ; Abolitionists of the North,—.V.
