Howland clips Falcons, 70-66AUSTINTOWN—Jon Silbaugh scored 27 points and the Howland High School basketball team ran their record to 7-0 last Friday night by beating their initial Steel Valley Conference foe, Austiontown Fitch, 70-06. The Falcons fell to 4-3 on the year.Joining Silbaugh in double figures for Howland were Frank Urbainia with 14 and Dave Walker with 12. Walker and Todd Baran dished out seven assists apiece and Pat Schnaible pulled down 11 rebounds.The Tigers out-rebounded Fitch, 35-24, but turned the ball over 16 times to only 10 for the Falcons.Howland held a four point lead, 20-16. after the first period and entered the locker room at the half tied, 26-all. A three-point play at the buzzer was the factor in bringing Fitch into the deadlock as the Tigers were leading by three, 26-23, with only eight seconds to play.Head coach Don Andres had expected a high scoring affair, “...the t higher the score the better ourchance for winning.” The Falcons had not given up more than 56 points to an a opponent all season and had held two teams to 35 points.At the end of three quarters of play the Tigers held a seven-point advantage, 45-38, and were up by as much as 10 points in the closing minutes. 64-54, before Fitch made it interesting.The Tigers hit on 27 of 45 attempts from the field and 16 of 21 from the foul line.Rod Amicone led the Fitch scorers w ith 20 points, Mike Sopko added 15 and Steve Hanousek had 12.The Falcons won the JV contest, 52-32.The Tigers were in Boardman on Tuesday night and host Warren Reserve Friday.
