A visitor from Atlanta told Key West police Sunday night he was robbed at the edge of South Beach at Duval Street by a man who came from behind and held what seemed to be a gun to his back The visitor, J.P. Buchanan, told police Ptl. Steve Ham mers he was robbed of $1,100 in cash from his wallet shortly after 10 p.m. while he was standing at the corner of South Beach watching the ocean The man said he was ap proached from behind by an armed robber who spoke with a Spanish accident and demanded that he not turn around, kneel, and give up any money he had Buchanan said when he reached for his wallet, the robber grabbed it. Then, with a wun or similar object still at his back, the robbery victim was ordered to le down in the sand. After the robbery, police said the victim's wallet, minus the large amount of cash, was found less than a block away Another robbery Early Sunday morning, a strong-arm robbery was reported by a California man who said he was held up by two men in a parking lot area at Front and Duval Street Michael Costa, of Van Nuys, Calif., told police Ptl. Frank Orta III, that he was robbed by two Oriental males wearing jogging shorts who then fled the area along Front Street toward Whitehead Street. The robbery, reported at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday, cost the visitor his wallet and about $60 in cash Accident fatal Key West police were in formed Saturday by South Miami Hospital of the death on Friday afternoon of a Key West woman who had been injured early on New Year's Day here in a fall from the back of a pickup truck. The woman, who died at 4:15 p.m. Friday at South Miami Hospital where she had been transferred from Key West after injuries in the accident, was identified as Patricia Surrency, of Whitehead Street. Key West police Ptl. Sandra Martin had originally in vestigated the accident reported at about 2 a.m. on Jan. 1 which reportedly in volved a 1981 pickup truck driven by John C. Surrency also of Whitehead Street. Police learned at the time that Patricia Surrency had been a passenger in the back or flatbed portion of the pickup truck when she fell out and was injured. Police Sgt. David Lariz is handling the homicide portion of the fatal accident Battery A battery incident was reported to city pele shortly after midnight Sunday by a runner who said he was in tentionally bumped, then was surrounded in threatening fashion by other juveniles and kicked. Nathan Crow, 22, of Whitehead Street, told police he was running and had reached the intersection of Eaton and Duval Street when a teenager bumped him in tentionally. When he stopped to ask the young man why he had struck him, an exchange developed in which several other juveniles then put Crow in fear of his safety. Burglary An interrupted burglary incident was reported to city police at about 1:40 a.m. by an Olivia Street resident. M. Jodoin told police she awoke to discover an intruder in her residence who fled out the front door when spotted. Asked today for a copy of the review report on the zoning board's two meetings that they monitored, Proby and Lewin said that they had none. Because of other county business of a much higher priority, Lewin said today, he and Proby had not the chance to sit down and write their report, not one ‘‘that would meaningful to the com mission,”’ he added. Asked if the report would be ready by Friday, Lewin said no, ‘Not unless some night he (Proby) and I sit up all night and write by the light of the moon. Asked if a verbal report on the issue could be requested or given to the commission Friday by himself and Proby, Lewin said that he did not know if the commission would ask for the report and added that ‘the whole composition of the (zoning) board could change Friday and the report could become superfluous,” though he said that a report would eventually be written on the matter by himself and Proby, however. “It's just one thing after another,’’ said Lewin, talking of the “press’’ of county business over the last part of 1983 — citing the county jail problems and Municipal Services District and many special meetings as the reason no report was able to be written. Both Proby and Lewin today said that they had talked over the two zoning board meetings they had monitored together, while Proby said today that he and Lewin had had a meeting of their minds on “some of the things’ that they saw happen at the two zoning board meetings they attended. Proby noted that he has been very busy with legal litigations, which Lewin also noted, saying that Proby has been in and out of court out of town often recently “Not only that,’ added Proby, ‘I'm called for every cotton pickin’ thing imaginable,’ noting the Citizen's telephone call today as one example. Environmentalists and developmentists disagree on the rules changes proposed by the zoning board — that still have not been finally acted on with environmentalists calling the rules changes good and the developmentalists calling the proposed changes bad. Mary Lin Johnson was appointed to the zoning board by the commission upon then Commissioner Wilhelmina Harvey's nomination when the commission's Sorensen, Hernandez and Swift refused to reappoint Dagny Johnson, a two year veteran of the zoning board and also Harvey's ap pointment to the zoning panel. Jaycocks’ service extolled The board meeting room of the City Electric System was con verted to a retirement party atmosphere Friday as Ladd Jaycocks, above right, was honored by more than 80 fellow employees. Seated in a ballon-adorned chair for the oc casion, Jaycocks was honored for his more than 30 years of service to CES in serious and humorous ways.
