KILL PANTHER, HUNT KITTENSRound Valley Party In Storm While After Big Varmint(Specl.il Correspondence of The Press) COVELO, Jan. 8. — Winter is upon us. We have steady rains and flurries of snow in the val ley, with tall trees on the high mountains bowed down with snow until they look like frosted ornaments on a birthday cake At last hunting for panther is good and shortly after New Year the wild country in the neighborhood of Travelers Home and Hell-Hole rang to the music of a pack of hounds, Raymond Hill’s celebrated bear dogs. Far out beyond the forks of the river they struck the track of a large mountain lion which they trailed about two hours before the quarry sought refuge in a tree, when Margaret Judge with steady hand and unerring aim sped a single bullet through its head. The lion was a female, apparently the mother of two kittens. Bounty on this predatory animal is $30; males $20— One instance when the female of the species is more valuable than the male. Others in the party, all ardent hunters, were Mai Conner, Raymond Hill, Mrs. Sadie Stein and Joey Stein. Storm drove them in, but now that there is a break in the weather another attempt will be made to find the kittens, no easy task in that broken country, but those who know the staying powers of the Hill pack predict the kittens will be found.Mrs. Will Kelley, of Fortuna, passed several days recently with her brother, Jake Short. Mrs. Kelley, has many old-time friends here who are glad to see her again and hear about the family.UK-IAH REPUBLICAN PRESS, JANUARY 9, 1935
