Long Sought Gunman Will Face Charge Of Murder TOLEDO, O., Jan. 9.—Rob ert Zwick, 87, Cincinnati, named by police as the midst desperate and most elusive killer in the Middle West, ran afoul of a rookie policeman and Toledo's new vice squad and landed in County Hospital with three bullet wounds in his head, another in his right arm and another in his chest. Patrolman Jay Maguire, re sponsible for Zwick’s capture, was in St. Vincent's Hospital today with a bullet wound in his hip. Detective Joseph Schaefer, Cin cinnati policeman, who has sought Zwick for five years to answer a steadily increasing number of charges arrived in Toledo today to effect Zwick’s removal to Cincin nati for prosecution on two first degree murder indictments. The wounded man's brothers, Edward and Gus Zwick, Cincinnati business men, also arrived in To ledo today to be at his bedside. Zwick was captured Sunday as he left a hotel here with his wife. He attempted to shoot his way out but was wounded by Maguire. One of Zwick's bullets struck Maguire. Zwick is wanted in Hamilton County on first degree murder in dictments charging him with the slaying of Marshal Peter Dumele of North College Hill, Cincinnati suburb, during a poolroom holdup, and with the killing of Robert Andres, state witness in Zwick's first trial for the Damele slaying. Zwick has been accused of slay ing John Marcus, Cincinnati and Toledo bootlegger; George Murphy, Cincinnati, and Murphy's sweet heart, Pauline Wilson. CINCINNATI, Jan. 9.—Robert Zwick, shot and captured in Toledo, was rated by police of southwest ern Ohio as the craftiest and moot daring criminal in police annals of the district. He was given the title of “the Fox after he escaped capture time after time. A dozen times authori ties had word of his hiding place, yet each time he slipped away from his pursuers. Although accused in scores of crimes, Zwick's official police re cord is brief. He is under indict ment in Hamilton County for the murder of Marshal Peter Dumele of North College Hill, a suburb of Cincinnati. The village officer was shot down by bandits who were holding up the Pelican Club on Easter Sunday, 1928. One bandit, Rodney Ford, was executed. Two others, Breck Lutes and John Messer, are serving life terms but Zwick, reputed leader of the band, escaped. According to Joseph B. Schaefer, Hamilton County criminal investi gator, Zwick has been identified from pictures as having taken part in raids on banks at Mason, ©., and at Somerville, O., in which $3,500 and $700 were taken. Par tial identification was made in at least a half dozen other bank rob beries in Ohio and southern Indi ana. Zwick also was marked for death by rival gangsters and twice was wounded, once escaping al most certain death by virtue of a bullet-proof vest.
