The citizens of Point Commerce and vi cinity, met on the 20th alt, to express their views upon the extension of the Wabash and Erie Canal to Evansville. Dr. D. Shepherd presided; and W. C. Andrews, officiated as Secretary. Hi. H. Throop, Esqr., offered the following Preamble and Resolution, which were unan imously adopted. Whereas, The Wabash and Erie Canal was undertaken as a great National work, to connect the navigable waters of Lake Erie, with those of the Mississippi River, as well for the encouragement of commerce and do mestic industry,as also to afford a grand thoroughfare for the National Government, for the transportation of Arms and Munitions of War, free of charge, from the Sea-board to the extreme West and South of the Union, through the heart of her own territory (should such an emergency occur) and Whereas, The present termina of said Ca nal, at Terre-Haute would defeat the main object for which it was intended, the Wabash River being navigable, even for small Boats, only during the spring freshets, which seldom last more than two or three months in the year, therefore, Resolved, That we deem the extension of said Canal, to Evansville, a work of abso lute and pressing importance to the Govern ment, easy of accomplishment, and vitally important, especially to the Great West. Resolved, 'That is the completion of said Canal, by which an uninterrupted communi cation will be opened from Boston and New York to St. Louis and New Orleans, a great bond of union will be formed between the East and West, North and South, which will form a Palladium for the perpetuity of our free institutions as we now enjoy them, through all future time. Resolved, That as much of the heaviest work on the Crosscut and Central Canals, has already been completed by the State of Indiana, the cost of its extension to Evans ville, will be trifling, compared with the im portance of the work when completed, to the whole union. Resolved, ‘That as the public Lands in the Vincennes Land District have been many years in market, the cost to the Government in keeping up a Land Office therein, for many years to come, will almost consume the proceeds of the sales of Lands in said dis trict. Resolved, That in our opinion the Gov ernment will sustain no ultimate loss by granting the unsold Lands, in said District, for the extension of said Canal to Evans ville. Resolved, That a copy of the proceedings of this Meeting, including the foregoing Preamble and Resolutions, signed by the Chairman and Secretary, be published in the Wabash Courier, and that a copy of said pa per be forwarded immediately to each of our Senators and Representatives in Congress.
