H. S Evans Died(Saturday MorningH. S. Evans, a prominent resident fcd'of Ashland, died at his home at 115 (Fork street at an early hour Satur- ha‘day morning. About a week ago he b was out on the street. During the past few days he had been having bad attacks which had seriously weakened him. He was dressed and about the house, however, ail day Friday, and walked up stairs to his bed chamber in the evening. During the night, however, he quietly passed away In his sleep some time between midnight and six o’clock in the morn-'(Mng. SyKHS ‘ *7is The death of Mr. Evans removes a ft* well known character from the an-L)'|nals of Ashland’s history, where his life had been interwoven in the career of its pioneer days. For over thirty years he had been one of the leading personages of this city, and had taken a deep interest in its growth and progress. His advent In this section dated to the laying of th# Southern F’acific railroad into Ashland. During the construction of this railway Mr. Evans had charge n 1 of the stores and hoarding houses of Abram Wheeler, who had the contract of building the road from Rose-burg to Ashland. »When this road was completed Mr. Evens eaine to Ashland and identified himself with Its life and progression as one of the leading business men of the city. He engaged in the pai .t and oil business and con-tinu ! * * this occupation until he sold out (o W. O. Dickerson in 1911. During the period of his business in Ashland he contracted lead poison-jing which had rendered him virtually an Invalid ever since.In his active days Mr. Evans wasprominent in all the social and fraternal enterprises of the city. He served as mayor for a term and was a charter member of Ashland Lodge, jl. 0. O. F., and was the leading spir-, it in the celebrations and amatcur plays and entertainments In the city. Since the death of his mother about fourteen years ago, and when his health began to fail Mr. Evans has depended upon the assistance of Mr. and Mrs. R. II. Drew, who lived with him and who gave him the enro and attention required of his crt* condition.Funeral services will be held this (Tuesday) afternoon at; 2 o’clock from Stock’s undertaking parlors under the auspices of the Odd Fellows, and interment will he made in the Odd Fellows section of Ashland cemetery. Surviving Mr. Evans are the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Emma J. McCumsky of Placor-ville, Cal.; Mrs. Anna Mace of To-coma, Wash.; C. W. Evans of Placer-villo, Cal.; J. S.
