INTEHVBNK IN MEXICO NOW,Bays Senator Catron, of Now Mexico,A filer Seeing Villa.Washington Jan. 3.—Intervention in Mexico is advocated by Senator Catron, of New Mexico, who has jufct returned from an investigation of conditions across the border, during which ho personally interviewed Francisco Villa, leader of the rebels. Our government does not want to Intervene, but such practices make intervention probable, the Senator told Villa. We are protecting foreigners and their property, Gen. Villa replied to the Senator. Intervention by the United States would mean a great, loss of life pud the destruction of millions of dollars' worth or property.Senator Catron assured the rebel leader if the United States undertook the job It would he prepared to handle it properly.Hut, returned Villa, is the United States army in any condition for Intervention in Mexico?”Senator Catron admitted the United Stares hag no army at present in comparison with its need.It ought to be doubled, he said to Villa. I am in favor of doubling the army with skeleton regiments which can be increased in time of need. We could then have an army of 200,000 men, which would bo sufficient to take care of the Mexican situation confronting us at the present time. The conditions in Mexico are worse than they were in Cuba when we intervened In that Island In behalf of humanity, declared Senator Catron. Few Americans lost their lives before the Spanish war, a.'d but little property belonlng to the citizens of this country was destroyed, but the loss of American lives in Mexico since the present disturbance began has been appalling. While loss of property is a secondary matter, It is a fact that two-flftha of the property of Mexico, amounting to something like $1,-038.000,000 at tho beginning of the present disturbance, has been destroyed or shrunken in value to less than one-third of Its former value. If present conditions continue, the property of Americans in Mexico will not be worth $10,000,000.
