Last Friday evening a banquet was held in that city when propositions were received to pay one half of the cost of a new building there, no matter to what the cost might run. As $40,0,00 is the mark set it is practically, the same as a donation of $20,000. A committee, was at once appointed tor the purpose of raising the other $20,-000.Here in Davenport the association has raised within the past year the stun of $17,000 for the purpose of paying for; the site for the building and liquidating the indebtedness of the association. Now it is desired to raise enough to construct a new building On January 8. AVednesday evening of this week, a banquet is to be held here and while there is no assurauce that a like proposition will be ruade by the neople of Davenport tin* members of the association feel that it would be a fine thing., and indeed it would. The Muscatine proposition came about in this way. Peter M. Musser, the lumberman of that place made an offer to pay 20’ per cent of the cost oi a new building no matter what the i cost might be. Word of this offer came [ to the ears of Thomas Irvine of St.! Paul and he wrote to the officers of The association at Muscatine that lie would have to do as well as Mr. Mus-ser, or would it please. Mr. Musser to put up 25 per cent of the cost of a building if he. Irvine, wouhl do so. That settled it.' And at this banquet at which were 1 Governor-elect A. B. Cummins. Judge | Sheldon P. Spencer of St. Louis, who I was here at the time Governor Shaw ! was entertained at a banquet; S. D.! Gordon, president of the Evangelisation society of Ohio, and others, the offers of* these gentlemen were made known stirring the people of the city to the final efforts to raise the remainder of the $40,000.
