By MATZ MALONE Herald-Star Staff Writer WELLSBURG — Joseph Campinelli Jr., who skipped bond in December after being indicted on six felony counts by the November grand jury, was taken into custody late Saturday in Phoenix. Campinelli was arrested by special agents of the FBI and Phoenix police, according to Special Agent Richard Furda in Wheeling. Campinelli was indicted by the November grand jury in Brooke County in connection with incidents happen ing during the past 13 years. He failed to appear for a Dec. 13 hearing. A federal fugitive warrant was issued in addition to a bench warrant by issued by Brooke County Circuit Court Judge Craig Broadwater. Furda said federal agents have checked leads in Florida, Colorado, Virginia, South Carolina and Canada during the past few weeks, but the break came late last week when infor mation was provided through an un named informant of Campinelli's whereabouts. Furda explained that Joe Coss, a Wellsburg bondsman who posted Cam pinelli’s $50,000 bond, received informa tion that Campinelli was in Phoenix and passed this information on the the FBI. Furda said Campinelli was arrested at a Phoenix apartment complex. Coss said Campinelli had rented an apartment under the name of Joe Bell. ‘There were no problems. There was no trouble at all, it was an easy arrest,”’ Furda said today. Coss confirmed that he offered a reward for information the would lead to Campinelli's apprehension and add ed the reward will be paid today ‘‘to the person or persons who provided the information.” Cass would not disclose the amount. Campinelli is being held in federal custody in Phoenix in lieu of $100,000 cash bond. He is expected to be arraign ed before a federal magistrate there today. Brooke County Prosecutor David Cross said today he is awaiting word on whether Campinelli will waive extradi tion or fight being returned to Brooke County ‘We will extradite — absolutely,” Cross said today. Cross noted that Campinelli faces an additional felony count for failure to ap pear for the Dec. 13 court date Campinelli, 46, a former Wellsburg patrolman who was a candidate for police chief last year, was indicted in connection with the 1972 armed robbery of managers of the Wellsburg Kroger and Super X stores, the 1980 unarmed robbery of Charles W. Tanley of Wellsburg and two house burglaries in Wellsburg He was arrested Nov. 5 and released from the Brooke County Jail Nov. 8 after Cass posted the $50,000 bond. On Dec. 27, Broadwater ruled that Campinelli’s bond should be forfeited, but stayed execution of the order until Friday.
