—A Weekly Feature—jAcr-tCT/By JACK CULVERGENESIS:—In the beginning of spotlight news events that swept over Worcester County during the year 1037, Clarence J Trader, Stockton electric plant owner, was found murdered on the night of January 1-1, at the home of his estranged wife, .Mrs. Jeanette B. Trader. And on February 1, Mrs Trader was jailed for murder Death stepped in on March 3, however, and removed Mrs. Trader from the case. And the mystery of Trader’s murder goes down in history for our grandchildren to speculate upon . .NUMBERS:—And then on March 26, 1037, Dr Disston W. Jacobs, Methodist Episcopal minister of Snow Hill, was the recipient of 31,000 m cash from a Philadelphia Sunday newspaper, all because the Snow Hill minister used his head, so to speak, and submitted the best original name and slogan for a newspaper magazine. Anyone who gets 81,000 for an idea these days makes “the front pages.”NEW LAWS:—Came the 1037 Legislative session and Worcester County emerged with eight brand new laws, including a Dispensary enactment that started things. Petitions for referendum, Court litigation, appeals, and what-nots are still in the limelight j over the Dispensary law. From a county-wide news angle, the Dispensary law rates among the best of 1937.EXODUS:—May 30, 1037, proved more than Decoration Day for ten Berlin residents, who found themselves helpless when a yacht, owned by Dr. Charles R. Law, of Berlin, crashed into rocks of the Ocean City jetty. Coast Guardsmen were on the job, however, and all were saved.KINGS:—And then came June 1, and Worcester County’s tax rate took a seven-cent tumble, thanks to an efficient Board of County Commissioners. With the aid primarily of net liquor profits, the county tax rate was reduced from 95 cents to KK cents on the S100. Which proved of general interest to county taxpayers.YE ‘MUDS’:—July 15, 1937, news of gratifying interest to this county “broke” when the War Department awarded a 8125,5S4 contract to dredge the famous (or infamous) Pocomoke River “Muds” to aid navigation. For many years this much-needed improvement had been sought and its attainment proved gratifying indeed.THREE BARS:—August 4, 1914, ushered in the World War. But August 4, 1937, witnessed another type of “war” at Ocean City when officials seized 17 gambling devices and slot machines. Eleven persons were arraigned on gambling charges, records show. And the 17 slot machines were destroyed. And that, too was news of stellar importance.TRAGEDY:—The Sinepuxent Bay, at Henry’s Grove, below Ocean City, proved to be a watery grave for five young men and young women on the afternoon of August 12, as 1937 rolled along. They were on a Sunday School picnic from St. Martin’s and waded out beyond their depth into a deep channel. There were no markers there to warn bathers of the channel’s presence on that day in August, 1937. And today there are still no markers to show where shallow water ends and death begins.THAT BRIDGE:—Ocean City taxpayers went to the polls on September 9, 1937, and by a majority vote, signified just where they wanted the State to build them a new bridge spanning Sinepuxent Bay. And Worcester Street site was chosen at the time Last week a rumor trickled from the State Roads Commission office, to the effect that the Ocean City bridge might still be built on another site, one that the special election didn’t favor.MURDER MYSTERY:—September 17 was the day they found the body of Alonza Blades, former Deputy Sheriff, who had been murdered in his car near Pocomoke City. Investigations that followed have failed to apprehend the slayer of the Pocomoke man. And as 193S gets under way, the Blades murder joins those of John Dryden, Herman Lewis, Clarence Trader and others that took place in the past decade or so.BIG EVENTS: — September 27 marked an outstanding occasion in Worcester .County for that evening Mayor Howard W. Jackson, of Baltimore, was honored at a dinner held in Snow Hill. And on November 1, a few days later, the County Democratic Woman’s Club was formed at Snow Hill, one of its prime organizers being Miss Lena H .Riggin Then on November G, Mr. and Mrs. Turner M. Davis, of Box Iron, marked their 60th wedding anniversary and were congratulated by President Roosevelt.VENISON:—For the first time in 25 years County hunters enjoyed anopen season for four days on wild deer. They shot and killed no less than 19 males between December 1 and 4, inclusive The sport proved enjoyable to everyone except the wild deer. And deer hunting in Worcester County proved of high news value.FINIS:—1937’s final big nows event . took place on December 7, when yegg- 1 men burglarized the Home Bank of : ark Their only reward proved to be cash amounting to $174.01, mostly in pennies. One hundred and ; twenty-four pounds of pennies, to be exact, were taken. G-Men promise to • solve the robbery within the near fu- j ture.ADDENDA:—And so 193S begins. New stories will hold the spotlight. Events that perhaps may overshadow those of 1937.
