The original type of dog that won renown as a fighter was short and stocky, pretty short in the head, with big cheek muscles, giving great power to the Jaws—as an example, the Staffordshire bull terrier and the American pit bull terrier, which breeds are practically unchanged from the old-time warriors. Many modern dogs are as far removed as possible from this type. One of the assets of our modern type Is absence of cheek muscle, which 1 consider ridiculous, for these muscles stand for strength of bite.1 as breeders would soon find out had their dogs any work to do. Also the original t bull terrier was dead game, combining the dash of the terrier with the dauntless heart and tenacity of the bulldog, a virtue in which many winners to-day are sadly lacking. Gamencss ought to be the first consideration of the breed, as most enthusiasts will agree. Length of head seems to be the only criterion, while type and substance have to take a back seat. If all the bull’ is to be bred out of these terriers why not change, the name?
