Representatives of the state fire marshal’s office and other investigators Saturday continued an official probe into the cir cumstances and events leading up to Wednesday’s tragic ex plosion at the Wome Packing Co., 400 North First street, which took the lives of 16 persons and injured 52 workers. Investigators at both the state and local level Saturday revisited the scene of the dis aster in a continuing search for clues which might lead them to the cause of the explosion. The initial investigation centered around a 37-inch length of gas pipe which was removed from the ground near the center of the blast late Wednesday night. Heading the state probe is Bernard Sweeney, chief of the arson division of the state fire marshal’s office. Sweeney, to gether with Lt. Charles Davis, head of the Indiana state police laboratory and experts from the Board of Health and Bureau of Mines, labor division, are con ducting and will continue tests under the direction of the state fire marshal. Sweeney said they will con duct such tests as the techni cians deem necessary under the personal supervision of Lieu tenant Davis. Sweeney said last night, “I feel it is the duty and function of the Indiana state fire mar shal’s office to insure that those families of victims, who are un able to hire professional ex perts, at least can find out how their fathers or brothers died.
