I feel so happy to see distinguished East Indians here. It will let people know that of whatever race class or treed, the East Indians are not prepared to sea the Hon’ble Teei-ucksingh respected member of theEaat Indian race, intuited with impunity.“I must confess that tip to that morning I had much admiration and esteem for Capt. Teelucksingh nor as a partisan of East Indians though I am proud that I am an East Indian I am here aa one man to protest against the unmanly action of another person. I only hope that the Governor would not Judge the temperament and the character of Trinidadians by the unhappy and improper ebullition of a misbehaving pedagogue like Captain Cipriani. Trinidad people are known for their good manners. Hla conduct Is a stain on the good name of the public of Trinidad, and it i we did is regrettable that he should have for it.He moved a subsidiary motion which was seconded by Mr. J. I shall leave it for you to discuss. I will now Introduce as Chairman, Mr. A. We regret it more so because of the fact that the person whom we have you here to censure is one who has held out himself as the protagonist and champion of the down-trodden class including the East Indians.ONE ACT COVNTS,It is said that in a man’s wholecareer one act may be committedwhich will reveal his entire lifejust what he is and who he i* and by that one act Capt. Cipriani has revealed to the world who he Is and he docs not deserve to be noticed by any self-respecting person.(Hear Lear I.“Captain Cipriani has entered into public life and he ought to have known by this time that hernunt experience concerted opposition from rivals end he is expected to keep a cool and level head; and if he doesn’t he is expected to conduct himself with decorum like a gentleman. This meeting is to record your disapproval of the conduct of a man who has been trying to masquerade in the eyes of the public. The cream of the East Indian community has presented them-selves here tonight. It will go down on record for ell time that we met for the purpose I havestated.CONDUCT DEPRECATED.His conduct on that day Issomething that every decent »elf-respecting man woman and Childwill record their disapproval of. We show that we all stand behind the Hon. Sarran TeeluckHlngh solidly in one body and we feel the pain and ttie humiliation that he felt on that day and we weep with him. We also rejoice with him that he has under such great provocation shown himself a gentleman. (Applause) .Retaliation Is easy under provocation but it takes a re*| big-heartolt;| man a man who has practised a great deal of self-restraint to refrain fruoi using force againstforce when btwiesly insulted in thiswa v.‘T am sure I voice the sentiment* 0f those present and the entire East Indian community that the Hon Harran Teelucksingh act'd wisely ir, a manner that the East Indians of the colony or all over the world would expect their representative to act.( aptaln's Cipriani's act Is one that we cannot express in language strong enough. I for one find my-self groping in the dark hut I ear this, it is tiio act of a coward, andwe are ),fre tonight to prove toCaptain ( iprianl, and people, not only in Trinidad, that when our representative is insulted we aregong to show our disapproval ofthe fact.and muscle in your body aches to get at that man'’ The more we think of it. the higher will be our resentment. and the warmer we shall wax, so perhaps the less we say about it, the better. The Hon. Harran Teelucksingh has emulated that spirit of Mahatma Gandhi, who believes in turning the right cheek when he has been smitten on the left. That la what I shall strive todo tonight. I will ask you to forgive but not to forget. It la Indelibly written in our hearta.niSTABTKETL HEIRLOOM.Let it be your heirloom that Captain Cipriani did eo and so, and that you have to beware of himwho says he is the protagonist of the poor and needy 8ing it as alullaby to your children and bo-ware of him.Don’t try to avenge yourself upon him. If he comes to shake your hand, remember it is a filthyhand; say, I scorn it.COMPATRIOT CRITICISED. There is another matter I must deal with. It is the conduct of one of your own compatriots who on that ocrasion should have had the common decency to refrain from encouraging Captain Cipriani in what he did. That parson is ourfriend the Hon. Timothy Roodal. In voting that Captain Cipriani should not be expelled be was simply encouraging him. At least, heought to have had a sense of justice and decency about him, and to have remained nedtral when the motion was put. I think Captain Cipriani would have appreciated that. Now the Captain does not know if he has « friend or an I enemy in the Hon. Timothy Roodal if anything ahould happen to himto-morrow.I thought that the Captain’s manly courage would have enabled him to admit his wrong. The East Indians owe a great deal .to the Hon. Mr. Grant. It has been said that the Grant family has always beenfriends of the Ea^st Indians and this incident shows tlie truth of It.«lt;• 1It does seem as if th* mentality of the Hon. Timothy Roodal prevented him from being a man. But the other Hon. Members of theCount li came to the succour of theHon. Teelucksingh and Captain Cipriani wax asked to withdraw. Tho!*e who read this will see that the East Indians are not only numerically strong but morally and courageously strong.I am proud to know that my birthplace, Couva, has got auch a representative of the East Indian*.The Hon.
