Deatli of a Crimean VeteranAND PORT PIRIE PIONEER.At half past 10 o'clock yesterday rooming there passed away at his residence in Port Pine West Mr. Isaac George Gray, one of Port Pirle's earliest pioneers. Mr. Gray was born on March 16. 1*37. at Thornford in the County of Dorsetshire, and whs married to Miss Martha Bowden ..n April 11. 1«58. at the Congregational ' Church in Sherborn. At the age of 17 years the deceased enlisted in the army at Salisbury. November 5. 1854. joining thr Land Transportcorps ns a tirst-clas* driver in the 12th battalion, in charge of Major Foster. In the early part of lfc55 he went to the Crimea, shipping at Southhampton in the Indiana, belonging to the East India service. He landed at Balaktava in March, and saw active service, - transporting supplies to the army iro/n Balaklava to Sebastopol. While in the field he received a slight scalp wound, the iajury being inflicted by a shell from a half moon Russian battery cn the Corunna heights bursting close to him. He left the Crimea for England in October, 1856, voyaging over in the man-of-war Jagnee Watts. and gut bis discharge on arrival at Portsmouth. After a short spell in the old country he decided to try his fortune in Australia, and left England in the ship James Jorden, of the White Star line, in charge of Captain George Jenkins. He landed at Port Adelaide in June of the same year, first settling at Port Elliot, where he was gardening until 1873. when be came to Port Pirie. For a considerable portion of his long sojourn here the deceased, who was well known and much respected, accepted contracts under the Corporation, but latterly he has been living in retirement. failing health compelling him to relinquish active pursuits. Mr. Gray leaves a grown-up fam ily of seven — four sons and three daughters. The daughter* are Mrs. G. innes. and Mrs. E. Volkmann. of West Australia, and Miss Mabel Gray and the sons Messrs. George Gray, J P.. John, Charles, and Robert, all well known local townsmen. There are also 21 grandchildren and 4 great grand children. He has brothers in i his State — Mewirs. Fred Grey, J.P . of Port Pirie. Waite., nf pay-nebam. Samuel and Abel, of ,*0rt Elliott, William, of MeU°Se.' and Mark near Adelaide. The funeral will take place at 3 o'clock this afternoon.
