Mellanby and Posa face heavy duty scheduleSCOTT MELLANBY has a tougher schedule this weekend than the National Hockey League team which drafted him on the second round — the Philadephia Flyers. Mellanby and Vic Posa will be playing four games in the next four days. But the two freshmen will be wearing a University of Wisconsin sweater for only two of those games. They will skate tonight and Saturday night against Boston College at the Dane County Coliseum. On Sunday, they will join Team Canada (a.k.a. the Canadian National team) and they will play that night in Calgary and the following night in Thunder Bay against the touring Dynamo’s from Russia.Mellanby and Posa are hoping toMikeLucasCapital Times. Staff Writerfly back to Madison in time for Tuesday’s practice at the Coliseum; whereupon they will leave Thursday with the Badgers for next weekend’s series at Minnesota.Admittedly, UW Coach Jeff Sauer had some reservations about the timing of Team Canada’s invitation, and the travel which is involved for his two players: Mellanby, a forward, and Posa, a defenseman.“But I left the decision up to them,” Sauer said. “We told them how we felt about it. I don’t want to stand in their way. I think it’s a great opportunity for them to show the Olympic people what they can do.“I hope they can handle it from the travel standpoint. I’m not really in favor of it. But I’m not opposed, either. I just don’t see why the Olympic staff couldn’t come here and watch them play against Boston College.”DAVE KING is the head coach of the national team, which will represent Canada in Calgary, the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics. This is the developmental stage. King wants to evaluate potential recruits. But he also plans on assembling a team next year that will play andstay together until ’88. Obviously, many American college coaches, who rely on Canadian imports, are concerned about the ramifications of King’s master plan.“He has told us that he’s actively recruiting the same players that we are,” said Sauer. “They’re going to put a team together, and he wants the best players that he can have.“I’m in favor of an Olympic program. But when it’s not an Olympic year, it puts a burden on programs like ours. Right now, it (the two game tryout for Mellanby and Posa) is a short-term thing. I haven’t started thinking about next season yet.“But I hope we can get together as a league (the WCHA) and make some decisions on what we’re goingto do in these situations.”Scott Mellanby doesn’t want to look too far ahead, either. Naturally, he would love to play for his country in the Olympics. He skated for King last summer during a brief European tour.MOREOVER, there is a family connection. For the past 18 years, his father, Ralph Mellanby, has been the highly acclaimed executive producer of Hockey Night in Canada. But he will give up that position at the end of the season The elder Mellanby will be in charge of the Canadian television package for Olympic hockey. As a result, he will move his family (See LUCAS, Page 16)Scott Mellanby
