By BUB SIMS In the first night of six grade city recreation basketball, the Flyers put on a late rally, but lost to the Buckeyes, 19- 16, the Phantoms whipped the Cobras, 40-21, and the Black team relied on good defense and cold shooting by the Blue to score a 24-2 victory. The Buckeyes of Phil Cochran led at all quarter breaks and going into the fourth quarter led by a comfortable 16-7 score. But the Flyers of Tom Applegate outscored the Bucks 9-3 in the final stanza to come up just short of victory. Gary Goodman led all scorers with six points. Les Cochran had five and Darrell Arrington chipped in with four. Ivan Pennewitt had four points for the losing Flyers and Kerry Lewis and Brian McKinley both had three. An impressive offensive display was put on by the Phantoms of Joe Phillips, led by the good shooting of Mark Young, who was high scorer for the night with 18 points. The game was never in question as the Phantoms raced off to a 22-9 halftime rally. Aside from Phillips, Brent Reed and J.R. Brooks put in six points and Jason Baker threw in four. For the losing Cobras, coached by Bob Williamson, Tim McClanahan led the scoring with seven, and Larry Harris, Randy Webb and Joel Williamson came up with four. In the last game of the evening, the Black team, coached by George Bush, beat a frustrated Blue team, coached by Gilbert Smith. The Blue team evaded a shutout when Todd Smith fired up a shot that went in with only three seconds left. The Black team did not need any last second heroics, as Mark Bush netted eight points, while Brett Prickett notched seven.
