Annual Speed Events for the Canine Racers were Witnes sed by Thousands--Races Took Place New Year’s Morn It was pretty cold for the thou sands who lined Roeser avenue on New Year's morning, but in spite of the low temperature there is no dis puting the fact that it was strictly a dog's day in this city. The wise aittie roadsters and their enthusiastic drivers were to be keen dong preliminary stunts up and down the speedway—from the im perial hotel to the post office, at a very early hour. There was a big field of entries for the three events and some capital sport was provided. Many dogs that started didn’t finish—or at least didn't finnsh at the regulation “get off” place, for the faithful canina is of a sociable disposition and often when the youthful driver saw visions of a glorious win his dog would no tice some acquaintance in the crowd and without consulting the driver would go off to argue out some pro blem, or extend the customary meet ings of the glad new year. Some of the racers were spoiling for a fight and they didn’t have to 20, more than two or three blocks to find it, for there was blood in the eye of many a domestic pet at that parti cular time. Some of the animals looked after their own business and didn't even stop to consult with a free, as dogs sometimes have a habit of doing. These are the chaps that made the races while the others made their drivers mad. Some of the dogs show ed the greatest patience and intelli gence, never paying the slightest at tention do anything but business, and and it was no small strain on the dog nature either, seeing so many of his kind around that wanted to be cummy. The big crowd that lined either side of Rosser had lots of fun, thor oughly appreciating the work of the steady-tong kind and enjoying the antic of the racers that were not particularily impressed with the sol emnity of the crention, that is as it touched the driver. Put if we are to have theer races and a success made of them, in the future the crowds must learn to leave the road to the contestants. Unless a dog was in the first row yesterday he received practically no show for the crowd nearly always closed in and blocked the way for those who had received a poor start. There is no reason why the crowd shouldn't stay back near the sde walk and give the boys and their dog a chance and in this way bet ter races will be secured and those who do not care to push out to the middle of the road, will have a better chance of weeing the sport. THE WINNERS. The following were winners in yesterday's contests: Free-for-all—1, Arthur Shinck; 2, Robert Hosie; 2, James Currie; 4, J. Dietz. Team Trace—1, Bruce Noble; 2, \l bert Clark. Tandem race—1,Bruce Noble; 2, Albert Clark. Special race open to winners of first place in the other races--1, Bruce Noble.
