Manager Harry has decided to begin the j new century with the obliterating of i the word which has seen good service |and been worn almost threadbare in the exchange of courtesies* over thetelephone,II renfter the Michigan Telephone ‘central” will reply to the “ring up,” by tin inquiry, “number.” This will not necessarily mean that the subscriber must give the number; hi may call by name if he chooses the same as ever. Manager Harry says that ‘‘number?” is much more refined and ncv. century-ish than the old time “hello! ”fhe girls at central are having a hard time to break themselves of the old “hello” habit but the innovation has come to stay, however, and they arc doing the best they can with it, falling back upon their old-fashioned “heilo” as infrequently as possible.
