By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS WILSON — Bluegrass leg end Doc Watson will perform a free concert this fall as part of Wilson’s first Whirligig Festival, organiz ers said. Watson, a master flatpick er, will perform Saturday, Nov. 5, on an outdoor stage on Nash Street downtown. The event’s planners hope to fill three outdoor stages with a variety of performers of several types of music. “The vision of the Whirligig Festival is to bring different folks together,” said Brian Bowman, a co chairman of the planning committee. “He’s the hub of the wheel, but there will be other kinds of music.” Other events include a bar becue cook-off and a street festival. Wilson Works Together, a community improvement ini tiative formed by the city of Wilson and the Wilson Cham ber of Commerce, is plan ning the festival. It chose whirligigs as a theme because it wanted something unique to Wilson. Internationally recog nized folk artist Wallis Simp son, who lives in Wilson County, is known for his large, colorful metal whirligigs, wind-driven cre ations that were exhibited at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Two of his creations are on display downtown now — at the Wilson Rose Garden and at the Employ ment Security Office.
