A story of growthThe Forest Park FiremenKv MARY ARTHURNorth Journal WriterFORKST PARK—The ForestPark Volunteer Fire Department ishoused in a handsome $210,000 house with six large pieces of equipment and 44 devoted men, but it was notalways that way.The department has come a long yvay. In August of I960, William Cohn Jr. organized a group of men and announced that Forest Park had a fire department, all that was neededwas for voters to pass a $24,(KK) bondissue. The issue was put before thevoters and passedIt was announced in January, 1961. that Forest Park had a official fire department and the new administrators were Al Fenske, firepresident; Hill Cohen, vice president; lun Michaels, secretary, and Don Fngllsh. treasurer.partimSpringdale inued to inv hours ibegan.The men twgan training with 19 active members and Don Michaelswas elected flw* first fire chief The department went into operation in December 1%!. The men housed their first piece Equipment, a 1946 model pumper borrowed from a Columbus unit, in abarn at Sharon and WaycrossRoads The pumper later waspurchased tor $1,000 and is still inuse.The second pumper was deliveredin September lt;! The Ladies Auxiliary in 1963 bought an International Van to carry lieavy rescueec|uipnient and in late November of1963. the Womens Club purchased a life squad car from the Greenhills Fire I ept which was later given to a home tor the aged in northern Ohio. \ new life squad was delivered onSeptember 20. IMS for $13,000Things were well under way and larger quarters were neededthe WomensKarly ill 1967, a bond issue was put before the voters for a municipal building costing $210,000 at 1201 West Kemper Road and passed. This building, in 1968, was honorable mention in the annual architectual contest.Later that year,Auxiliary got together with contractors m Forest Park w ho donated their time and the women paid for the materials to build a three-story training building.The building lias completesprinkler systems, a completestand-pipe system and is made ofbrick. Forest Park is the only%-volunteer department in Ohio tohave such a training building.Things went well hut on April I, 1970 the department was saddenedby the death of Cohen, its beloved assistant chief who passed away suddenly.Ilis men did not forget him and all he had done for his department. The Forest Park's Cadillac lifesquad car led the funeral procession from the church to the entrance of the cemetery. The Indies Auxilary purchased a 1971 Dodge window van to use as aNo. 2 ambulance, The equipmentwas bought by the auxilary. The fireman transformed the van into a No. I ambulance with all the latestequipmentThere is one special box of equipment on both life squads, a toyfor every injured child, a policy started since the beginning of the squad.There has leen injuries but nofatalities ot the Forest Park FireDepartment.We salute the following men*Hob Lippincott, Fire Chief; Barney Crawford, Ass t.
