His rise to fame began in October of 1955 with his first record for Specialty, “Tutti Frutti.Although he had recorded for Victor a number of years ago. nothing much happened. His material then consisted mostly of slow ballads, despite Rich ard's vigorous protest that rhythm came from his heart.It’s been coming from his heart since the age of 7, when1 he used his hands to hump outthe rhythms of original tunes to accompany his own voice. At 14 he switched from street singing to the choir of the Macon Church of God in Christ.Richard was. born in Macon at 12:01 a.m. Christmas Day, 1935, third in a family of 14.
