Officer. Hunt Discovers James Cook Helping Himself. Judge Gregory Sends Him to Jil For 30 Days. For a number of weeks past the resi dents of Belden avenue and adjacent streets have been missing their chick ens, but could gain no clue to the thief. On Friday night shortly after 10 o’clock while officer Hunt was lying on the sofae at his home on Riverside ave nue he heard the chickens in John Greenwood's chicken house making a . Going to his back door the officer saw someone strike a match inside the coop.t A man’s form was plainly seen and the officer waited until he appeared in the door’ of the chicken house with a nice rooster under his arm.’ Officer Hunt ‘then stepped off his porch and sunrise to the fence dividing his yard from that, of Greenwood, he recognized James Cook. Cook must have heard the officer at the same time for he dropped the rooster and made for Belden ave nue. Officer Hunt ran up Riverside and around to Belden avenue and met, Cook just coming out of Mr. Green wood's yard. Being sure of Cook, the officer went to Mr. Greenwood’s hennery to see if anyone else was there. Failing to find any other thief the officer notified Mr. Greenwood and the latter’s son followed Cook to his home on the hill, while Hunt sent word downtown for a police man. He then went after Cook and placed him under arrest and turned him over to Officer Bartram who browsht him downtown and locked him up When arrested at his home Cook told his wife that he did not know why he visited Mr. Greenwood’s chicken house, and on Saturday while in the station house he admitted to Prosecu ting Attorney Ferris,that he had taken the chicken and would never do so again if released. When brought before Judge Gregory this morning, however, Cook denied all that he had previously stated and said that he had not been in the hen nery, going on to tell a most improba ble story. The court failed to believe him and he was found guilty and sentenced to Bridgeport jail for 30 days.
