Takes Place Made Vacant by Deforest Settle and Will Re ceive Salary of $4,000. KELLEY IS GIVEN CREDIT State Committeeman Urged Gov ernor Dix to Appoint Syracusan —Coming After Naming of D. W. Peck as Superintendent of Public Works, City Is Doubly Honored. George W. Driscoll, of this city, a brother of Congressman M. E. Driscoll, was today appointed State Fair com missioner by Governor Dix. He takes the place made vacant by the resigna tion of former city treasurer De Forest Settle. The salary attached to the office is $4,000. The appointment of Mr. Driscoll was brought about through the efforts of Democratic State Committeeman Wi liam H. Kelley. Coming upon the heels of the ap pointment of Duncan W. Peck of this city, to be State Superintendent of Public Works, the naming of a Syra cuse man to the vacant place on the State Fair commission its held to be a signal mark of honor for the city. Indorsed by Kelley, Mr. Driscoll’s name was first men tioned in connection with the position of State Fair commissioner in The Herald. State Committeeman Kelley consulted with Governor Dix and urged that the place made vacant by the resignation of Mr. Settle rightfully belonged to this city. It was felt that the fact that the Governor had seen fit to name Mr. Peck to the important Place of State Superintendent of Pub lic Works might result in depriving the city of the much desired place on the State Fair commission. Mr. Kelley, however, urged the Gov ernor that the city was justly en titled to the commissionership, even if it had got the place of State Superin tendent of Public Works The argu ments that the Democratic State com mitteeman used apparently were force ful ones, and the announcement at noon to day of the selection of Mr. Driscoll was the result. Mr. Driscoll is widely known in the city through his profession as a law yer and also from the part that he has played in the Democratic politics of Syracuse. Two years ago he was a can didate for mayor on the Democratic ticket and in a four-cornered fight made such a showing that it was most gratifying to him and his friends. It has been frequently said since then that had Mr. Driscoll not been opposed by three other candidates, one of whom was Mayor Schoeneck, that the out come would have been different. Active in Campaign. During the recent campaign Mr. Driscoll spoke almost nightly for the fusion ticket headed by James S. Lud ington. Mr. Driscoll’s name was one of those strongly mentioned as the nominee for the place of mayor on the Democratic ticket, but he announced some time before the city convention that he would not accept the nomina tion if it were tendered him. Mr. Settle had served the commission since 1902. His resignation, coming after his declination to run again for city treasurer, has caused much spec ulation, and the political prophets have declared that it was the first step in plan to make Mr. Settle a State officer. The State Fair commission will hold its annual meeting in Albany tomor row, at which plans for this year’s fair will be outlined.
