By Scott Angus Gazette StaffMany people don’t make New Year’s resolutions. Maybe they’re too lazy to come up with them. Maybe they know they won’t follow through on them. Maybe they are afraid they will.Whatever their reasons, many people are heading into 1989 without a plan for bettering themselves and the world around them.We have no idea who has or who hasn’t made resolutions for 1989 But out of the kindness of our hearts, we’ve come up with resolutions—some serious, some silly—for a variety of people and organizations. It’s only a better world we’re after.• GM employees and management in Janesville should resolve to continue working together to improve the local plant’s efficiency and standing in the corporate family. The work-rule changes that helped secure future production initially were resisted by some union and management old-school-ers, largely out of principle, but they have worked out splendidly for nearly all concerned.• Steve Sheiffer, Janesville city manager, should resolve to change his allegiance from the Boston Celtics to the Milwaukee Bucks. There’s no telling what will happen to city government when the Bird-less Celtics flutter and hit the ground about March. With the Bucks, the expectations are much lower; hence, a quick exit from the play-off picture would be much less of a shock for Sheiffer, a Massachusetts native who has been known to go into a major swoon when his hopes for the Celtics crash like a shattered backboard.• The Janesville YMCA Board of Directors should resolve to be open and realistic about plans and prospects for the local club. In retrospect, comments in 1988 that the current renovation is “phase one” of a long-term improvement project while fund-raising continues seem mighty unrealistic—not to mention unfair to donors and members.
