Students of Grimshaw will Start the school term next Mon day in the new Grimshaw s school, which is the pride and joy “ people of the district, bring in as it does modern school facili ties to children enrolled in the town school, which is operated by Peace River School Division No. 10. The building replaces a two-room school burned several months ago, since which time Students have been attending Classes in individual schools and halls in the village. The new school is the most modern in the Peace River coun try, featuring up-to-date light ing, heating and other develop ments which should help to make teaching more efficient and make learning easier for the children. The school faces northwest on the grounds occupied by the former school. The building con sists of two wings at right angles to each other, the southwest wing being 147 feet long and the northwest wing 131 feet long both being 36 feet wide. Along the inside of these two wings is a corridor 12 feet wide, running the entire length of both wings. Teaching facilities are provid ed in four rooms, each of which is 24x39 feet. These rooms are decorated in different color schemes, with blackboard space provided on two walls. In the two junior rooms work tables are provided in the form of rounded counters, at which the children may do hand work and where storage of materials is possible. In addition to the four class rooms are a library 21x36, teach ers’ rooms, principal's office, outer office, waiting room, science room, home economics room, girls’ and boys’ locker rooms, wash rooms, shower rooms. All floors on the main floor are covered with battle ship linoleum. Special attention has been given to lghting arrangements, with each classroom having 10 lights, these being the fluores cent type with two 40-watt lights in each installation, making 800 watts for each room. In addition every opportunity is given to make full use of natural light, with one side of each room con sisting mainly of windows. Bila teral lighting is provided by secondary lights above the hall way through the walls on the side of the room opposite to the main windows. Casement-type windows are provided in the middle section of windows on the outside of each room, this window providing a means of escape for the students in case of fire. Fire alarm facili ties have been provided by an electric alarm system, which can be set in action from a central point. Other electrical systems in operation provide for calling of classes by use of bells and instal lation to provide a radio hookup. The interior of the building is plastered with donna conna on the ceiling. The exterior of the building is finished in white stucco with red and yellow trim ming. A partial basement has been excavated, to provide boiler room, coal storage space, work room and cistern, this being 33x50 feet, with a ramp leading from the main floor to the base ment. Steam heat is used for heating the building. The building is piped for mo dern water facilities throughout, but due to shortage of water the wash rooms and showers only will be in operation immediately un til a water supply other than the cistern is made available. Hot water is provided through a pressure system. While the present building provides only four classrooms provision has been made for ad dition of other classrooms and an auditorium, the basic plant now in operation providing suf ficient heat for the additions when needed. SILVER TEA The Grimshaw Women’s In stitute are holding a Silver Tea in the new school Saturday January 3, from 2.30 to 5 p.m. Everybody welcome. 223 p Built at a cost of between $60, 000 and $70,000, the building was financed jointly by Peace River School Division No. 10 on Grimshaw Village School Dis trict, the division paying two thirds the cost and the schoo strict one-third. The contractor for the project was R. Lahey, Peace River. W. Johnson has been appointed caretaker, while members of the teaching staff are J. McFetridge, principal; Mrs. K. Cragland, Mrs. M. Newton, Mrs. M. McLeod. Saturday afternoon of this week Grimshaw Women’s Insti tute will hold a tea in the school from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. to give citizens of the district an op portunity to visit the school and inspect it before classes are held. The official opening will be held some time in June, open ing arrangements to be an nounced later by the board of Peace River School Division No 10.
