In the newspapers of that section it is stated that a coal mine has been found near Mitchell at a depth of 430 feet below the surface. Some oil has been taken out with the water that comes from the coal stratum and some expectations have been aroused from the presence of these two val uable commodities. In the earlier years of South Da kota’s history many such indications of coal were followed and consider able money was expended in drilling. Coal, or lignite, was often found and about at the depth of the Mitchell de posit, but there was always a doubt about the presence of deposits in pay ing quantities, the great depth and the abundance of water preventing satisfactory investigation. Most of the artesian wells in the southern part of the state have yield ed small quantities of oil, but the presence of water has always preclud ed the application of satisfactory tests. Throughout the region west of the Jim, both oil and coal have been found in widely separated localities, but everywhere they have been min gled with artesian water in large quantities. Some day, perhaps, the water will be overcome and beneath it may be found oil in paying quan tities. Certainly the indications war rant the search.
