Joliet Council, No. 382, Knights of Columbus, was instituted Nov. 18, 1898 and has about 465 members. It is a fraternal organization restricted to persons of the Catholic faith, and looks after the welfare of its members when they become ill. A sick committee of nine members is charged with the duty of looking after the sick and at tending to their care and welfare. In the event of death of a member the committee takes steps to assure the certainty that Christian burial is ac corded and that the customary bene fits of the organization are paid. The officers of the council are as follows: Grand Knight, Thomas V. Brennan. Deputy Grand Knight, Cal D. O’Cal lahan. Financial Secretary, Patrick E. Con don, Recording Secretary, George Lowry. Chancellor, James A. Bray. Advocate, William C. Mooney. Warden, Louis Glass. Inside Guard, Harry Devlin. Outside Guard, John McCarthy. Lecturer, Maurice F. Lennon. The insurance feature of the order has been declared by a committee of three, not members of the order, who investigated the old line life insurance company system as being the nearest approach to t of all the fraternal as sociations of the country, and the re serve is the largest per capita of any such organization. The principal object of the order is to look after the spiritual and moral welfare of the members, and to lend every encouragement toward attaining the higher ideals of life. This is, in a great measure, accomplished by the lessons taught in the ritual and by the class of entertainments that are put on from time to time for the bene fit of the members. The council occupies the second and third floors of the Allen building at the corner of Chicago and Van Buren streets, where it has a fine suite of rooms fitted up with particular refer ence to the needs of the organization.
