RIVER RIPPLES.Gorge Near Hawesville Broken and Prospects for Resumption of Navigation Good.Owei sboeo, Ky., Dec. 29.—Suspended navigation along the Ohio for two weeks and more kept Santa Claus out of many Illinois and Kentucky towns which are dependent entirely upon the river for their visits from the white-whitkered saint. In other words, because the steamboats , couldn't run, children and grown np people ot those places wcie deprived of a large store of Christmastide candies, fruits, toys and more substantial gifts. Not only that, but the (stocks of merchants there are running low, and citizens ot the affected towns are threatened with a famine of coal oil anti Staples if the river is not opened soon, or if they do not resort to long and tedious overland runs with wagon to the nearest railroad station. The river did not gorge at this point, owing to the rise in thejem-peratnre, and there is very little ice in the stream. The gorge above Hawesville broke during the storm, which was the beginning of the Christmas cold snap. There are no gorges in the river now, and navigation will probably be resumed in a few days, unless another drop in temperature takes place. The Taraacon, which was ice bound above Hawesville, passed this place yesterday morning sod is now an * chored in Green river. She sustained very little damage.
