DENNIS MELCHER was bom in Baden* Germany, in 1814. In 1839, he left Germany and came to America, locating in New Orleans, where he stayed four months, when he went to Missouri ; from Missouri he went to Louisville Kentucky, where he remained until 1843, when he came to Iowa. He first located at Burlington, where he lived until TS51; he then-removed to his present home in Danville Township. In 1B42. Mr. Melcher went to New Albany. Indiana, where he was joined in marriage to Mary Ann Faust, also a native of Germany. By this marriage they have had nine children, only six of whom are now living. Mr. Melcher began life with no property; he had. how. ever, a good knowledge of the pottery business, which he began in Burlington, without any capital, in 1844* After seven years work 5n Burlington, he transferred his business to its present location in Danville Township; here he employs eight men, turning out annually potrery to the value of seven thousand dollars. He also manufactures drain tiles, having built tbe first factory in the State. Burlington and the surrounding country furnishes a good market for his wares. Mr. Melcher has a large farm, a good home, a. loving family, and lives in good circumstances, honored by all who know him.
