MURDER OF AN ANTLSLAVERY EDITORIN AMERICA.The Executive Committee of the American Anti-Slavery Society (says the Emancipator of November 23), having received intelligence of the atrocious murder of their devoted coadjutor. Rev. Elijah P. Lovcjoy, at Alton, Illinois, by a band of ruffians, while making efforts tore-establish a religious free press, to spread 1 he cause of his enslaved countrymen, have deemed it proper to have solemn religious services in commemoration of this mournful event. A public meeting wiU therefore be held by Divine permission, on Tuesday evening, the 28th inst., in Broadway Tabernacle, at 7 o'clock. Order of services:—1. Selected Hymn. 2. Reading of the Sciip-tures, 3. Prayer. 4. Reading of Declaration of Sentiments of the late Rev. E. P. Lovejoy. 5. Funeral Dirge. 6. Funeral Discourse. 7. Collection for the Widow and Orphan children of the martyred Lovcjoy. 8. Benediction.Tlic Rev. Elijah Lovejoy fell on the night of the 7tli instant, by a shot deliberately fired from the midst of an armed and infuriated band of Americans, wliile lawfully engaged in defending his property his press, against lawless violence, instigated by the spirit of American Slavery. As far as we can gather from the various state nients published in the papers, tlie facts are these:—Mr. Lovcjoy, having been violently driven from the city of St. Louis, Avhcre he published a religious newspaper, retired with his press to Alton, a neighbouring place in Illinois, which is called a free state. Here he had beenbroken up no less than three times, and had his presses destroyed, avowedly fcr no other reason than because he would maintain and exercise the right of free discussion in regard to the crimes and evils connected with American slavciy.
