The first Duel in The United States.— The first duel which took place in the United States, happened in New England, in tiis year 1691. About a year after the set- j tlenient of the Northern States, two servants, urged by a mutual spirit of animosity, determined to put an end to I heir quarrel, by what in France and England was the Tnode honourahlCy the duel; they appointed a place of meeting, to which they Loth repaired. They fought with great fury, but after awhile left the field of battle, without either having experienced the slightest scratch. The Puritans, whose wisdom and religious scruples are well known, caused them to be arrested, and to punish them for a conduct which they considered so irnpious^o criminal, and so op* p;sed to the public quiet,—condemned them to be bound together, hand and foot, for twenty four hours, without either food or drink.
