The Thornton Township Young Republican club received the October club of the month award at a recent Cook County Young Republican general meet ing. The award is presented on the basis of club activities and individual mem ber activities. The Thornton township YA’s have 80 members with an average meeting attendance of 30 people. At the October regular meeting, the film ‘The Hippies” was shown to more than 100 persons, the majority of whom were Thornton Junior college students. The club also held its annual fund-raising event, “‘Las Vegas night,”’ which was attended by over 200 people. As part of a continuing civic and community organizations program, in co-operation with Illinois Bell Telephone company, the club presented a filmed pro gram, “Does Your Vote Count? Illinois Voters’ Test,” to several civic groups. The club is planning to con tinue the voters’ test presen tations and to present a political seminar to high school and junior college students in the spring. MEMBERS ARE active in other political and civic organizations including club president, Glen Allred, who is serving his second term as president of the Calumet City Republican club, and is a member of the Southeast Com munity Hospital Planning association. He is a director of the Calumet City Jaycees and was Illinois Jaycee Speak-up winner in 1966 and won the Calumet City Jaycees Presiden tial award and the Outstanding Young Man of America award in 1967. Jim Meyerchick, former treasurer of the YA’s, is cur rently serving as an alderman in Calumet City, and political action chairman, Tom Miller, is a trustee of the village of South Holland. Several members act as precinct captains in the township. Members are also active in county and state YR activities. Thornton’s third vice president, Carol Biedzycki, is Cook county YR secretary, Mary Black is state second vice president, and Sherry Dyrek is state district governor for the fourth Con gressional district. At the county convention in 1967, Patti Krause won the Indian award, which goes to the man and woman who have done outstanding work for the year in their own clubs and in their communities. THE THORNTON township Young Republican club has had an elected officer on the YA County board three out of the last four years, including the 1964 county chairman, Raymond Valdes. It has received a club of the month award every year since 1963 and was club of the year in 1964.
