At Ceremony inMayor and Mrs Flovd Gray returned to Sandpoint Saturday from Washington, I) C, bringing with them a plaque honoring the city of Sandpoint for its efforts in the lfJB7 National (‘lean Up Contest Mayor Gray was presented with the plaque by Secretary of the interior Stewart L. Ldall at a ceremony in the national capital on Tuesday, Feb 20 The 1007 distinguished ac hieve ment award was presented to Sandpoint in recognition for an outstanding community improvement program for towns under 25,000 The ceremony took place at the Statler-Hilton Hotel William F McCurdy who heads the Sears Roebuck Foundation whic h provided the awards, was the principal speaker Sandpoint earned the award through the efforts of Sandpoint civic groups and individuals who teamed up to improve the appearance of the city The (ity administration cooperated in every way possible to assist in the beautification and improvement program whic h went on for many weeksWere Senators* GuestsWashingtonbit loud,” said Mayor Gray“Later we learned that a bombhad been exploded near theSoviet embassy ”The Grays flew to New YorkWednesday night to spend twodays before returning to Sandpoint They attended Radio City Music* Hall where they saw the famed Rocket ten dance, listened to a symphony orchestra and watched a ballet Thursday evening they attended a Broadway play, “Don’t Drink the Water,” starring Peggy Cass at the Ethel Barrymore theatre.They visited the Statue of Liberty and went to the top of the Empire State Building Friday as part of “doing” New York Thev enplaned Saturday morning for the trip back to Spokane landing at Spokane Internationa!
