Rush hour crash injures oneHampton man hospitalized, traffic divertedJackie Ricciardi/jricciardi^i seacoastonline.com A car is towed away after being involved in an accident on Portsmouth Avenue in Stratham on Wednesday morning.BY LARA BRICKERIbrickerCd seacoastonline.comSTRATHAM — A Hampton man on his way to meet a friend for breakfast in Exeter ended up in Exeter Hospital instead after his car was totaled in a two-car accident Wednesday morning.Keith Whalen, 29, of Hampton, was treated and released from Exeter Hospital following the accident, according to hospital spokeswoman Karen Ellis.The accident caused a “traffic nightmare,” as it took place in the middle of the intersection of routes 108 and 101 at 8:09 a.m., during the morning rush hour, said Stratham Police Officer John Emerson. Because of the location of the crash, eight police cruisers from Exeter, Newfields and Stratham were used to divert traffic.Whalen was trapped inside his 1995 Ford Taurus sedan, after the driver's side was hit by a 1999 Chevy Silverado pickup truck driven by Charles Mac-Dougall, 70, of Exeter. Firefighters had to cut the roof offthe car to extricate Whalen from inside.Emerson said no charges are pending at this time, but the accident appears to be the result of one of the drivers running a red light.Whalen was pulling off Route 101 from Hampton and attempting to cross Route 108 to head to downtown Exeter. MacDougall was heading from Exeter to the Stratham Dunkin’ Donuts to geta coffee, police said.Somewhere in the intersection, MacDougall's truck hit the driver’s side of the Taurus. The force of the collision sent the Taurus into a 360 degree spin, Emerson said.“It was pretty horrific,” Emerson said.Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and both of the airbags in the Taurus deployed. MacDougall was not injured in theaccident.Traffic from Stratham to Exeter on Route 108 was diverted up Route 101 and down Newfields Road, while police and fire crews handled the accident. Traffic coming off Route 101 east was able to drive through the intersection, but had to weave around the two cars.“It wouldn’t have been so bad if it hadn’t been for all the traffic,” Emerson said.
