WITH VIEW OF UPLIFTING BUSI NESS CONDITIONS HERE RESOLUTIONS ADOPTED And Will Be Presented to Govern ment Offcials in Near Future The Bedford Chamber of Commerce was instrumental in calling an im portant conference. For some time there has been a need of some con certed action of the various interests of the Indiana Limestone district. Several days ago the officers of the Chamber of Commerce invited a con sultation with the officers of the Stone Club in which it was agreeable to hold a conference in their Club Rooms to which they offered their earliest sup port. An urgent invitation was extended to the Bloomington Chamber of Com merce, the officers and representatives of the Oolitic Belt Conference of stone cutters, the planermen, the banking interests of Bloomington and Bedford, the Bedford Stone Club, the Bedford Stone Club Auxiliary, the Indiana Limestone Quarrymen’s Ass’n, and di rectors of the Bedford and Blooming ton Chambers of Commerce. This meeting was called for and held at 3 o'clock, Tuesday, February 26th. All the interests were well repre sented. The conference was organized with W. F E. McCormick, president of the Bedford Chamber of Commerce, as chairman, and C. C. Creighton, Secy. of the Bloomington Chamber of Com merce, as secretary. The consensus of opinion was that some action towards bringing the dis tressing conditions of this district to the notice of the authoriies at Wash ingggton to the end that some relief might be given us, should be taken. It is understood that our mills can be converted into munition or war ma terial plants, and that if the govern ment was so disposed, these plants would be utilized. The conference re solved into a plan whereby this mat ter should be crystallized by selecting a committee on resolutions with R. M. Richter, chairman, and C. L. Walters, secretary. Resolutions were prepar ed and signed by representatives of the various interests. These resolutions wil be sent to the representatives of the Second and Third Districts of Indiana, and to the two Senators, and a copy to go to the daily papers of Bedford and Bloom ington. RESOLUTIONS WHEREAS, the communities of Mon roe and Lawrence Counties, Indiana, are in effect entirely dependent on the Indiana limestone industry, so far as their existence and welfare are con cerned, and WHEREAS, the curtailment of chanel building activities has all but annihilated the opportunities of said industry to continue its ordinary activities, thereby depriving thousands of men of their means of caring a livelihood, thus reducing to a negli gible point the ability of these com munities to sustain themselves, and WHEREAS, the labor in these com munities is not generally in a posit ion to transfer its efforts to other lo calities, nor the employers, merchants, and direct, as well as indirect, com mercial establishments, as a result, in a position to guard against threaten ed disintegration, and WHEREAS, the public welfare de mands that in a measure circulation in commercial channels be re-estab lished, which it is believed can be brought about by activities contribut ing to the success of our war oper atons. THEREFORE, Be it resolved that the undersigned organizations through their duly accredited representatives, do hereby urgently pray the Senat ors of the State of Indiana, the Cong ressmen representing Monroe and Lawrence Counties, as also the entire congressional delegation of the State of Indiana, to intercede in behalf of these communities to the end that their needs be recognized without de lay and opportunity extended either to assist in the prosecution of the war by the manufacture of war supplies or by enabling the Indiana Limestone industry to secure for its product a reasonable percentage of the perman ent construction work for which vast sums are now being expended by prac tically every department of the Fed eral Government.
