Their party was a large one. and to Itn strength they owed their successful though arduous trip from the Missouri river to the Willamette valley, which was their objective point. At the head of the Grand Ronde valley they were halted two days by a large war party of Walla Walla and Cause j Indians, who came across with the •express purpose of murdering the ~J whites or forcing them to return. The! *8 bold front presented by the emigrants r8 coupled with the arrival of Mr. Whitman and a party of Ne* Perce Indians averted the calamity and the Journey * was continued.These and many other incidents of like nature make the book Interesting reading.
