Editor $ Democrat I [Although we have already published one communication showing the absolute absence of any scandal connected with the drowning of Lilly Osborn on McDowell Creek, we also give the following, as It adds Interest to a eery peculiar case and throws new light on It.]I see In to-day's Issue of your paper an account of the death of If its Idly Osborn, of this place,and 1 would raise my voice to crush down the base slander and calumny thrown on her young life. 1 was no* per-personally acquainted with either her or any of her family, but let me give you a few facts and you can draw your own conclusions. Lily was working here during the time my late husband, Dr J C Gllbe*!, visited and lectured In this place last Sep -tcmber,and came to consult him. I have studied medicine several years with my late husband and consequently knew about most of his pallents^nd on coming here to live he told me of this case, and the facts are simply these* The menstrual period which usually takes place at the age of thirteen or fourteen years had never occurred with her, and she had been In poor health for several years as a result of this. Every physician knows that the non appearance or irregularity of this function of the female organism Is one of the primary causes of insanity among women. The medicine which my husband gave her had partially rectified this f nd brought about the desired result,which much encouraged her, when the suppl/ became exhausted and her father came to our cflke for more the day tny husband died,but of course did not get any. On hit arrival home with the sad news, Lily sat as If in a deep study tor some time, finally she looked up at her (athet and mother and said, '‘There my saviour has gone, lt*U no use trying any more, he was the only one who could cure me.” She had shown very decided signs of mental weakness for s month previous to this, at Intervals, but from this time shn was quite despondent, and I hive not the least doubt that the shock was too much in her weak state and that it preyed upon her mind. Her parents are poor,' but they watched over her as well as possible and did all they could for her, but in the flooded state of the country they were practically shut off from much intercourse with their neighbors. I wish these fscts published because I feel so deeply for her poor mother. It it not enougn for her bruise 1 and bleeding heart to bear 10 have to lay awty her child under such sad circumstances as I have related, without seme monster, nay rather fiend In human shapv, trying to rob the dead girl of that priceless treasure, her chastity t The whole community here were deeply grieved and shocked at her sad end, and her young girl companions feel as If a slur had been cast upon them ail since reading the article In£our paper. It Is true that she left a note ut it contained this only : **I am going up the creek to drown myself It Is no use living longer without God.*1 Not even her signature to it. At for as her knowing the surveyor spoken of In your article Is concerned I know nothing of that. It Is none of my business ; but I do know that It Is against all the laws of nature for there to be a particle of truth in the cause of death assigned In your article.
