—Some friends in Olignnni’s Messenger (Paris) says of Miss Elizabeth Beach, who went down with the shipwrecked City of Columbus : “She came to Paris to studyFrench. Her personal attractions and her intellectual gilts made for her many friends. But the charm of her grace and culture was crowned by u spirit of earnest, happy, all-pervading piety which was irresistible. Wishing to perfect herself in the knowledge and practice of the French language, she secured as a teacher one of the best professors in Paris. He was au unbeliever, but at once became interested in her sincerity. As subjects for French conversation he asked her to recount to him anything that had most interested her. She listened attentively to Pasteur Ber-sier, and one Monday morning repeated i all that she could of his sermon. The | professor was interested not only in the language, but iu the matter, asking her where she had heard that. The third Monday he was still more impressed, and exclaimed 41 must hear that preacher for myself.’ He did so ; not only once, but 1 many times, and became a changed man.
