The Sul Ross Lobos swept a three-game series from the visiting Trinity University Tigers Saturday at Kobernot Field, handing the San Antonio team 11-0, 16-0, 4-3 losses. With the three wins, the Lobos move to 69 on the season, surpassing their win mark for the past two seasons. The Lobos started off with two runs in the first inning as Judd Ryan doubled home Jimmy Morris. Ryan later scored after moving to third on an Eddie Duarte fly ball to right field and a Tiger error off Jeff Parnell’s bat. Duarte started off a five run third inning for the Lobos with his second home run of the season. Randy Aleman and Arturo Moreno each added RBIs for the Lobos. Catcher Scott Sulser picked up two more RBIs with a single that scored Aleman and shortstop Rio Acosta. Ryan sealed the Sul Ross win in the fourth with his second homer of the season, again scoring Morris who had reached ase on a single. Aleman picked up another RBI, scoring Steve Wiggins who got aboard on a Trinity error. Pitcher Jeff Price picked up the win for Sul Ross by going five innings and allowing only two hits in the shutout. Game two was a carbon copy of the first, except the Lobos picked up a bigger lead in the first inning. They also scored by the third and fourth inning This time Dennis Taylor picked up the win for the Lobos by throwing another two-hit shutout against the Tigers. Rowdy Brown came in for the final innings and took care of the Tigers by retiring the side on strike outs. Little John Bowman turned out to be the biggest Sul Ross hitter on the day. He pounded out three hits for three RBIs. He scored the fist of seven first inning runs for the Lobos and then came back later in the inning to pick up the final RBI of the frame. Rod Venner faced a bases loaded double for two runs and was followed by a two-RBI single by Lobo shortstop George Cantu. Pannell picked up the other Sul Ross RBI earlier with a bases loaded walk. Bowman and Pannell picked up more Sul Ross runs when poor Trinity fielding put designated hitter Darrell Holmes and Moreno aboard and walks allowed catcher Bob Jarrett and Morris on the base paths in the third inning. Parnell picked up two RBIs with a single, and a grounder to second by Bowman was good for his second RBI. The slugging exhibition continued in the fourth. Morris bounced a bases-loaded triple off the wall in deep left-center field and would have been credited with an inside the park grand slam if the Tiger's cut-off man had not committed a handling error. The final game Sunday went before the Lobos took the win with a come-from behind effort in the bottom of the eighth. A lefty Johnny Guerrero gave to Shay Morris after four innings on the mound with the score tied 1-1. Guerrero gave up one run on three hits and two walks. Offensively, the Lobos stranded six base runners. Morris allowed runs in the fifth and eighth innings on four hits and a walk. Moreno cut off two potential runs and home plate and second with throws from center field. In the eighth, two walks put Pannell and Venner aboard. A pop-up bunt over the pitcher by Acosta advanced the runners and the throwing error scored Pannell. Pinch hitter Brent Harris drew an intentional walk to load the bases, bringing up Sulser. Sulser hit into a fielder’s choice which stopped Venner at the plate for the first out. Moreno tied the game with a sharp single to left, keeping the bases loaded for Bowman. Bowman delivered the game-winning run by scoring Harris from third with a deep, sacrifice fly to left field. ‘The little hero was not finished, though. In the ninth, Bowman ‘snuffed the final Trinity spark by erasing the Tigers’ lead-off base runner with a back-handed grab of a Trinity line shot up the middle for the game-ending double play. Bowman finished the series with five hits in eight times at the plate, good for one game-winning hit and four RBIs. The Lobos return to action against Western New Mexico University Friday and Saturday at Kobernot Field. Double headers are scheduled both days with Friday’s action beginning at 3 p.m. and Saturday’ getting underway at noon. A LONG WAY TO GO-- Rio Acosta took his head-long plunge into second a little early, but he made it to the bag in time. The Lobos swept a three-game series from Trinity University at Kokernot Field in weekend action.
