Govasis deadat 69Roy Govas, 69, lifelong resident of the Austin area and one of the area’s greatest pioneers and benefactors of boys baseball, died on Monday of this week in the Oak Park hospital.The well known sports enthusiast, who helped thousands of kids in a 38-year association with baseball both at Columbus Park and with the highly successful Lexon Baseball leagues, is being waked through Wednesday night of this week at the Kavanagh Funeral Home, 238 Chicago. Oak Park. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the Forest Home cemetery in Forest Park.Govas, who resided at 1160 S. Mason, is survived by a brother. Edward, 5544 Van Buren, and two sisters, Dorothy Govas of Cyprus. Calif, ana Mrs. Alice Walker of St.Petersburg. FlaDuring the 17 year periodfrom 1952 to 1969 Govas was the commissioner of the Lexon Boys Baseball leag ues which had an outstand ing program and layout at Lexington and Lavergne The field was later named the Dan Honan Field in hon or of the late Austin area congressman, Dan Ronan.Some 100 youths ranging from nine to 14 years of age played each year in the Lex on leagues during the 17-year span. Back in 1964 the Lexon team won the nation al Bronco league champion ship for youths 11 and 12 years of age.Some of the players who played under Govas' spon sorship attained highly successful careers in professional baseball. One is Frank Quilici, manager of the Minnesota Twins, and another is Buzz Capra, pitcher for the Atlanta Braves.
