Were Walking Through Country When Caught—Had Been Fugi tives Almost a Week Herbert and Walter Kincaid, brothers, of Oswald, wanted for the slaving of George Spangler, special agent for the Kanawha, Glen Jean and Eastern, a week ago last night, were arrested yesterday about three and one-half miles from Springdale, in Greenbrier county, and are now lodged in the county jail. Lt. Gib son, Privates Kiddy, Beckett and Gladwell, of the State Police, made the arrests. Officer Spangler, it is said, went to the home of the Kincaids to ar rest them on some minor charge, having to do with disorderly con duct. He had arrested Wallace and had handcuffed him when Herbert slipped out the door. The officer, accompanied by Wal lace, followed him out, and as they came to the edge of the yard in front of the house, Herbert rose from be hind a fence, placed a pistol near the breast of the officer and fired. Spangler died within a few minutes. The men then took the keys from the officer, unlocked the handcuffs and disappeared. Owing to the heavy sleet storm between this city and Oswald all communication was severed. Mes sengers brought word to the local detachment of State Police about 11:30, or in the neighborhood — or three hours after the crime had been committed. They hurried to the scene but the men had too much of a start, and after making every pos sible attempt to head them off, the officers returned here. The chase did not end there, how ever. Having some idea of the di rection in which the men had gone, word was sent to apprehend them. A reward of $200 was offered by the county for their arrest, and descrip tions of them were mailed to vari ous points. 10 When captured yesterday the men were walking across country, seem ingly having abandoned the car in which they were supposed to have made their escape. After their ar rest the officers immediately noti fied the department here, and start ed to Beckley with them. They reached here about 6 o'clock yesterday evening and the men were lodged in jail to await a hearing. It is presumed they will be tried at the next term of criminal court.
