It was a great surprise and shock to the citizens of this place and vi cinity when the awful and sad in telligence reached here on last Thursday afternoon that Mr. Ma berry Neal had drowned himself at his landing in the Ohio river. It seems that he took an ax and went up on the hillside to chop some wood, but soon left the ax lying on the ground, and although he had been closely watched previous ly to leaving his father’s house, he succeeded in making his escape, going direct from the hillside to the river, where his lifeless body was soon discovered by those in search. It was supposed he had broken a hole in the ice with his hands, as they were badly bruised, as was also his face and head. The news of the sad affair was soon scattered broadcast over the land and reached the daily papers. The funeral occurred on last Sat urday afternoon, at the M. E church here, and the remains were laid beside those of his beloved wife in the Brooks Cemetery. Revs. Joseph Osborne and Nicholas Smith conducted the funeral services and the attendance was unusually large Rev. Joseph Osborne’s remarks were very touching, and the two orphan children, aged parents and all the relatives have the sympathy of many friends in their great af fliction. Mr. Neal was a good man, his character above reproach and his life for years one of a true Christian, and his memory will always be held in high esteem by a large circle of friends and acquaintances.
