Melissa Barker Stowe, was born near Granville, Ohio, July 4th 1822 where she spent the early years of her life.Soon after attaining her majority shecame to Mt. Vernon, Ohio, where in 184.r she made a profession of religion, uniting with the Baptist church at that place.On the 10th day of May 1853 she was united in marriage with Geo. C. Shipman, and in Oct. of the same year they settled in Iowa, having resided ever since near or in Wcst Liberty, excepting a temporary stay of four years in Washington Co., Ohio, hut not relinquishing their home in Iowa.Mrs. Shipman was the mother of six children, two boys and four girls, all of whom are now living except one boy who died in ISCO at the age of one and a half years.On March 2nvl 1884 she united with the Presbvterian church of West Liber*ty.She ever had a strong devotion and tender love for her family. Self was forgotten in the interests of others.She died Feb. 21st 1885 at the age of 02 years, 7 months and 17 days. Her whole life was the development of the practical and true religion.
