Fremont to the ownership of Bird Island In the Bay of Han Francisco. The amount involved is estimated at over ♦KMKKUXXl.Gen. Fremont, when military governor of California, purchased the island from Mexico. Uncle Sara repudiated the pure hew and declined to either buy from the pathfinder or reimburse him. However, the government aome years later took possession of the island, which is the key to the Son Frsncisco harbor, and erected fortifications and a lighthouse upon It at a cost of over #9,000,000,Gen. Fremont sought relief from con-frrewe in vain- Some time before heu ** low in ho securedfinancial aid from the Rev. Mr. Covert, giving therefor an option on a half interest iu the Island. He intended to prwa his claim, but death intervened. Mrs. Jessie Benton Fremont and her son will now join in the proceedings before the court of claims.
