lt;§ On the 30tli of November, 1807, the late ■. President, Mr. Spates, directed Isaac It. ,Man*. Superentendent of the Georgetown Division, to send to him eight hundred and - twenty-six dollars to pay for an ice-breaker c and cooking stoves and fixtures, which had ■ lieen built at Cumberland for the use of the , Georgetown Division. In his letter reques-1 ting this money to be sent to him, lie pro-. mises Maus that he will pay for the ice-1 breaker and fixtures, get the proper vouch-, | ers and send them to him by mail. On the ’ 2d of December Mr. Spates writes to Maus acknowledging the receipt of the money, and promising to send receipts to-morrow, and on the 3d he accordingly sends to Maus a bill and receipt, of which the following is a copy:Cumberland Md., } Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Co.. -December 3, 1807.)To Thomas Sheridan, Dr.To building, ironing, painting and furnishing one ice-breaker for use of Georgetown Division, fXQO.OO.Received payment of Isaac It. Mau, Superintendent of Georgetown Division, j Thomas Sheridan. When this receipt was brought to the attention of thecoinmittee, it became apparent |it was not the handwriting of Mr. Sheridan, which they found upon other papers i in the office of the Company. They tlierc-! fore called Mr. Sheridan before them and j exhibited to him the paper bearing his name. He at once pronounced it a fabrication, and without hesitation eon tinned his declaration in the most solemn manner by the affidavit which the committee submit with this report. The ice-breaker which was thus attributed to Mr. Sheridan had been built by the Suprcntcudent of the Cumberland Division and paid for by that ofliccr and the payment allowed to him in his accounts. The bill and receipt purporting to be issued by Mr. Sheridan was, as the Hoard will perceive, regularly signed, dated and stamped, and lorc all the outward marks of a genuine paper, and Mr. Maus treating it as such, filed it as a voucher with his statement No. 11 of expenses for Novemlier, 1837. The circumstances are such us to show beyond all reasonable doubt that this paper was fabricated, or caused to Ik* fabricated, by Mr. Spates. The money which it represented was remitted directly by Mans to him, and the fabricated paper was sent toW nun 1 i ■ i
